The Trans-Institutional Programs (TIPs) initiative aims to foster collaboration among schools, researchers and students at Vanderbilt. It is the centerpiece of the 2013-14 Academic Strategic Plan. The investment of $50 million will fund programs devoted to discovery and learning with an “interdisciplinary” and “multidisciplinary” approach that address society’s most pressing problems. The program launched in November of 2014.

The primary role will be in research and program development, but teaching skills are also important. The Vanderbilt Master of Public Health (MPH) Program is a two-year interdisciplinary program offered through the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. The Global Health track is designed to educate innovative and effective public health professionals in the development and management of effective global health initiatives, to contribute to sound public health policies and practices, and to engage in meaningful partnerships with communities.

Dr. Richard (‘Ran’) Nisbett, of the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health and of Tubman University in Liberia has developed a lay-language educational tool for employees of the United Methodist Church in West Africa around Ebola virus and its care and prevention. Muktar Aliyu, associate professor of health policy and associate professor of medicine. Aliyu studies adverse birth outcomes associated with maternal lifestyle-related factors (cigarette smoking, alcohol use, weight gain) and with infectious diseases in resource-limited settings (HIV/AIDS, malaria).

Established in 2012 as a joint effort between the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine and the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health, the Vanderbilt Tuberculosis Center is a focal point for collaborative efforts and tuberculosis research with an emphasis on epidemiology, clinical trials, and translational research. The Center works to cultivate and mentor junior faculty members, fellows, and students from Vanderbilt University, Meharry Medical College, and collaborating health departments and international institutions.
