VUMC Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program:
International Cleft/Craniofacial Rotation Program with the Instituto de Orthopedia Infantil Franklin D. Roosevelt
The resident-patient care experience includes the management of children with craniofacial anomalies, in particular cleft lip/palate. The rotation offers the Resident additional exposure in the care of patients with skeletal jaw deformities. By virtue of the urban setting of this rotation, motor vehicle crashes and maxillofacial trauma are endemic. Therefore the rotation will also provide the L3/L5 Resident, well-trained in the management of maxillofacial trauma, valuable enrichment in the management of facial trauma in a trauma care setting substantially different from the Vanderbilt model. The Residents also gain valuable experience providing surgical care in an environment where resources are inconsistent and vary widely between different health care facilities within Bogota.
