Vanderbilt-Mozambique Biomedical Informatics (VM-BMI)

In collaboration, the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Mozambique and the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH) have partnered to will establish the Vanderbilt-Mozambique Biomedical Informatics (VM-BMI) training and research program, the first of its kind in Portuguese-speaking (Lusophone) African countries, with a specific focus on HIV. BMI uses computational and information sciences approaches primarily in biology and human health. VM-BMI will have several components.

Know your Status

Building on the success of a pilot program training traditional healers to initiate HIV counseling and testing, the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health and the University of Witwatersrand have partnered to expand healer-initiated HIV testing and linkage to care in South Africa.The study team will conduct a cluster, randomized, controlled trial comparing healer-initiated HIV counseling and testing to the standard of care in rural South Africa by utilizing an existing and trusted resource — traditional healers.

Vanderbilt-Nigeria Research Ethics Training (V-NET)

Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH) and collaborators Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and Bayero University (BUK) have partnered to establish the Vanderbilt-Nigeria Research Ethics Training Program (V-NET). The program is a comprehensive initiative that encompasses curricular development, didactic coursework, skills development, mentoring, and practicum experiences designed to build capacity for the ethical design, conduct, and oversight of genetic and genomic research in Nigeria.

Vanderbilt-Vietnam Genetic Epidemiology Training Program (V2- GENE)

The Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH), Hanoi Medical University (HMU), and the Vietnam National Cancer Institute (VNCI) have partnered on a new training program from the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health. The Vanderbilt-Vietnam Genetic Epidemiology Training Program (V2- GENE) is an initiative to train scholars in the genetic epidemiology of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). 

Inaugural Zambia Research Development and Ethics (ZIRDE) Workshop held in Lusaka

2024 Vermund Global Health Achievement Award

Dr. Sten H. Vermund was the founding director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH). The Sten H. Vermund Awards for Excellence in Global Health recognize Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the health of all people through distinguished global health scholarship, education, training, and/or service. This annual $1,500 award recognizes significant achievement in the field of global health during academic training at VUSM.

Dr. Sten H. Vermund was the founding director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH). The Sten H. Vermund Awards for Excellence in Global Health recognize Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the health of all people through distinguished global health scholarship, education, training, and/or service.

Dr. April Kapu is an accomplished healthcare executive with over 30 years in the field, including 19 years as a critical care nurse practitioner. Dr. Kapu is the Associate Dean for Strategic Partnerships and Global Affairs at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in Nashville, Tennessee. Prior to her current roles, she served as an associate chief nursing officer for advanced practice at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she established advanced practice infrastructure and expanded advanced practice models of care across the health system. Dr. Kapu is frequently consulted for her expertise in advanced practice leadership and has presented in many national and international forums, authored chapters in advanced practice nursing textbooks, and published manuscripts in numerous peer-reviewed medical and nursing journals. She holds several professional roles including Fellow for the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Past President and Fellow for AANP, and Fellow for the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Kapu has received several awards including Vanderbilt’s “Transformational Nurse Leader of the Year”, Tennessee Hospital Association’s “Nurse of Clinical Distinction” and nationally, Modern Healthcare’s “2022 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives”.  She holds both a masters and doctoral degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.
