We are pleased that you are interested in residency/fellowship programs at Vanderbilt Medical Center. VUMC is an institution that has built a strong reputation as a leader in medical education of health professionals, research in medical science, and patient care throughout the Southeast. Residency training began at Vanderbilt Medical Center with just 12 residents in 1925. Now VUMC trains over 1000 house staff in over 100 accredited specialty and subspecialty programs. VUMC offers residency experiences in a major teaching facility with diverse patient populations, state-of-the art technology, cutting edge research, and outstanding faculty.
In order to be eligible to enter one of our programs, you must meet the minimum selection criteria described in our policy on resident/fellow eligibility and selection (located in our house staff manual). Recruitment is coordinated by each individual program. For list of programs see our training programs page.
Individuals applying for any of our programs must hold an appropriate degree for the program to which they apply. If you hold a foreign medical degree, a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is also required. In addition to these institutional requirements, each program has specific eligibility requirements that must be satisfied.
Vanderbilt University is an equal opportunity institution offering excellent benefits for all employees. A partial listing of benefits can be viewed in the house staff candidate benefits outline. Applicants for employment as a Vanderbilt resident/clinical fellow or visiting resident/visiting clinical fellow must successfully pass reference and background screenings as a condition of that assignment/employment.
Although most program applications are made through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), some programs accept applications directly, or through the San Francisco Match. Check individual programs for specific application guidelines.
