The Vanderbilt Program for lgbtq Health is excited to partner with McAninch Psychological and Consulting Services and the Oasis Center for a weekend of transgender community health presentations with Sand Chang, PhD.
On Nov. 17, Dr. Chang will lead "The Political is Personal: Building Skills to Fuel Trans Resistance and Resilience," a community discussion on what it means to engage in self-care and healing in order to strengthen the movement toward justice, as well as navigate interactions with health care and other challenging systems. On Nov. 18, Dr. Chang will present "Working with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Clients: Core Competencies for Mental Health Providers." This six-hour, mixed level course is for medical and mental health providers who would like to learn core competencies on how to best provide affirming and culturally sensitive mental health care to transgender and gender nonconforming clients, as well as stay up-to-date on current practices in medical care and the role of the mental health provider. Dr. Chang (pronouns: they/them/theirs) is a Chinese American nonbinary, genderqueer, gender fluid psychologist, educator, and trainer. They currently work for NCAL Kaiser Permanente in designing clinical and cultural competence education programs for transgender health. They also maintain a private practice in Oakland and specializing in trauma and EMDR, addictions, relationships, and healing work with marginalized communities, particularly people affected by the intersections of racism, homophobia, and transphobia. Chang served on the task force that authored the 2015 APA Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Clients and is the past Chair of the APA Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity.
