A Letter From the Medical Director

Christopher G Hughes, MD, MS The Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center has a long tradition of being a center of excellence in caring for patients with both common and uncommon neurological illnesses. Our team is specially trained to provide the most advanced, up-to-date care of patients with stroke, seizure, neuromuscular disorders, aneurysms, neurologic surgery, spine surgery, and many other conditions. We are committed to working together to improve our knowledge and the care we provide to our patients. Our goal is to learn from every patient to continually improve our services. We are also dedicated to training the future leaders in research, clinical innovation, and patient care, and we put those same skills into our practice every day.

Patient care in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit involves a collaborative model between neurologists, neurosurgeons, critical care physicians, nurse practitioners, nursing staff, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, other specialists, and trainees. This multidisciplinary collaboration leads to exceptional clinical care to provide our patients and families with the best possible outcome based on their conditions, needs, and wishes. We value honesty, shared decision-making, and consideration of both the short-term and long-term outlook. Our team is always here when our patients and community need us most.
