Taxability

The Nursing Tuition Assistance Benefit awarded to employees of VUMC is subject to all applicable federal tax laws.  This educational assistance arrangement may be deemed a working condition fringe benefit under applicable provisions of the Federal Tax Code in the sole discretion of Vanderbilt University.  Vanderbilt University determines, for each course for which this benefit is sought, whether the course work itself is deemed necessary to enhance or maintain the employee's occupational skills in rendering employment services to Vanderbilt University.  In addition, Vanderbilt University determines whether any course work may qualify the recipient for a new trade, business, or occupation.  Course work that does not meet the criteria as needed to enhance or maintain employment skills or that may qualify the employee for a new trade, business, or occupation, may be reimbursed or paid on behalf of the employee at the discretion of Vanderbilt University, but may be regarded and reported as a taxable benefit to the employee.  However, course work that Vanderbilt University determines will enhance or maintain employment skills and would not qualify the employee for a new trade, business, or occupation, may be reimbursed without tax consequences to the recipient of the benefit under this policy.  Vanderbilt University does not provide individual tax advice or counsel.  Staff members are encouraged to seek and obtain their own tax advice and counsel.
