SPOTLIGHT: Kristen M. Swanson, RN, PhD, FAAN
Dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Dr. Swanson visited Vanderbilt for Research Day, October 17, 2012, to present on her mid-range theory of caring. Dr. Swanson began her research career studying under Jean Watson, who developed a Theory of Caring. Dr. Swanson has modified this theory based upon empirical findings from her research on pregnancy and early fetal loss. Through the interplay between research, theory and practice Dr. Swansons theory has been translated into practice at University of North Carolina. The theory, and the model tested at UNC, involves the 5 Cs of caring: (1) caring capacity, (2) concerns and commitments, (3) conditions, (4) caring actions, and (5) consequences.
