Educator Development Program
The goal of the Educator Development Program (EDP) is to enhance the medical education knowledge, attitudes, and skills of all Vanderbilt University Medical Center faculty members (physicians, nurses, and scientists), learners (students, residents, and fellows), and other (administrators, department leaders) who teach in the medical graduate, or nursing school environment.

Brochure imageIn the context of the changing medical environment -- including continuous improvements to the curriculum -- resident teaching skills and faculty development are more important than ever. At Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, we are committed to providing educator development initiatives to assist faculty in their quest to become outstanding, up-to-date, nationally recognized teachers and leaders in medical education.

Participants in the Educator Development Program (EDP) can increase knowledge, enhance teaching skills, challenge attitudes toward teaching, explore learning styles and strengthen their scholarly approach and scholarship.

EDP Activities and Offerings

  • EDP Workshop iconEDP workshops are designed to be interactive learning experiences. All EDP facilitators have been trained in workshop design and presentation. In EDP workshops, participants will gain new knowledge, enhance previous knowledge, practice skills, create projects, and receive mentoring on individual work activities when appropriate. Most EDP workshops are open to Vanderbilt University Medical Center faculty and learners. A small number of workshops are by invitation only. Topics covered range from educational theory to technology in teaching.

    Workshops have limited seating; RSVP is required. See our EDP Newsletter for registration.

  • EDP Scholars ProgramThe EDP Scholars program is a 2-year faculty development, career development program that develops future leaders within the field of medical education. The program promotes career development, scholarly work (educational materials and teaching activities) and scholarship (posters, publications and presentations). The Curriculum Design and Evaluation Track focuses on designing, implementing and evaluating medical education curricula for any level of learning (students, residents/fellows, and faculty) across all specialties.

  • RATL

    Residents as Teachers and Leaders (RATL)

    The Residents as Teachers and Leaders (RATL ™) Program is a blended learning program consisting of web-based, self-learning modules and an interactive hands-on learning workshop. The purpose is to improve students, residents, fellows, and faculty members clinical teaching skills. RATL™ is currently available to all residency programs at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

    The Educator Development Program Fall 2024 RATL Modules and Workshops are scheduled from 5-6PM in person in Light Hall Conference Room 319 on the following dates (registration is required):

    • Session 1: Professional Identity - Tuesday, September 3rd (register here)
       
    • Session 2: Teaching Models 101 - Tuesday, September 10th (register here)
       
    • Session 3: Teaching Physical Exams and Psychomotor Skills - Tuesday, September 17th (register here)
       
    • Session 4: Evaluation and Feedback - Tuesday, September 24th (register here)

    The 16th Annual Gerald S. Gotterer Health Professions Education Research Day (HPERD) will be held December 13, 2024, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Poster Session starts at 10:00 am and the keynote speaker session and announcements begin at 12:00 noon. 

    Submission, Review, and Acceptance Timeline

    • Call for Abstracts Opens: Tuesday, June 25th, 2024
    • Abstract Submission Due Date: Midnight on Monday, August 26th
    • Notification of Acceptances: After September 10, 2024
    • Submit Posters for Blue Ribbon Review: Before Midnight Tuesday, November 5, 2024

    Submitting an Abstract

    All abstracts must be submitted via the REDCap survey.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    • Please complete all items requested and do not exceed word counts listed. Incomplete submissions and submissions not following requested format will be eliminated.
    • We suggest completing a word document of the abstract to assure word limits and format/organization, then copy and paste it into the REDCap survey.
    • The EDP HPERD Poster Submission Form (REDCap Survey) includes:
      • Name, degree, email, level/appointment, department/school (e.g.: department of medicine/SOM), phone.
      • Select the poster category:
        • Curriculum design (descriptions/evaluation)
        • Advising and Mentoring
        • Educational Leadership
        • Learner Assessments
        • Educational Research
        • Enduring Educational Materials/Tools
        • Other Educational Activity and describe
      • Poster Title and ALL names of all authors on the poster (in the correct order) – this is important for the HPERD brochure.
      • Select the abstract format from the list below:
        • Curriculum Abstract – Background and statement of need, curricular goals and objectives, curricular description, evaluation methods, measured outcomes (proposed/measured), and conclusions.
        • Research Abstract – Background, methods, results, and conclusion.
        • Other Abstract – Background, purpose, description, outcome measures/results, conclusion.
      • Copy and paste the 300-word abstract in the space provided.
      • Blue Ribbon Award: Select if you want your poster to undergo peer review for the blue-ribbon award. This award recognizes excellence in the educational development process and is presented to the winners and announced at the HPERD noon session. Submitting for blue ribbon review requires the full poster (in pdf form) is submitted by the date above.

    Poster Development: We will send suggestions for creating outstanding, inviting, and visually appealing posters to all those who submit by the deadline above.
