Transfusion Medicine Fellowship

Jennifer Andrews, MD, MSc
Program Director

Description

This is an exciting and innovative program that incorporates a required 24-week core component on the Transfusion service and an 8-week core rotation on the Coagulation and Hemostasis service.  Four-week rotations on the Apheresis service and at the Blood Assurance Collection Center are also required.  Four-week elective rotations include rotations on the Hematology/Oncology services (Peds and Adult), HLA laboratory, Stem Cell Processing laboratory, and Research. Away elective rotations at other institutions may be arranged.

A major strength of this Fellowship program is the Diagnostic Management Team (DMT) care model, which includes daily Morning Rounds with the Attending Physician, house staff, laboratory staff and Transfusion Safety Officers.

The fellowship includes a strong didactic component with regular lectures, seminars, journal clubs and case conferences.  The fellow will be required to present regularly at these meetings and will also regularly attend and participate in various QA/QC meeting including the hospital Transfusion Committee and Patient Blood Management Committee.  In addition, the fellow will regularly participate with the faculty in seminar meetings with Hematology/Oncology (Adult and Peds) in order to give the fellow broad exposure to all fields of transfusion medicine. The fellow will almost always have residents and students to work alongside and tutor, as well as visiting residents and fellows from other clinical services such as Hematology/Oncology and Anesthesia.

The fellow will also complete a research project under faculty supervision. Travel funds are provided to attend one annual national meeting during the year, and a $800 stipend will be provided for the purchase of textbooks, journals, other reference materials and membership dues. Publication of research, review and/or commentary papers will be strongly encouraged.
