Karen Stewart, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, and colleagues from Virginia Commonwealth University Institute of Drug and Alcohol Studies recently published a review article on impulsivity and smoking in patients with comorbid mental health concerns. The article, "Impulsivity and cue reactivity in smokers with comorbid depression and anxiety: possible implications for smoking cessation treatment strategies," appears in The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. Smoking is more prevalent in individuals with anxiety and depression and these individuals have greater difficulty with quitting. This review provides suggestions and future directions for research focused on improving outcomes in smoking cessation in this population by including the constructs of impulsivity and cue reactivity.
