Hollender Lecture Devanand

"Clinico-pathological correlations and therapeutics of psychopathology in neurodegenerative disorders"

October 15 Hollender Lecture in Geriatric Psychiatry | Davangere P. Devanand

Abstract:

Psychiatric symptoms are common in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders and are associated with increased hospitalization, institutionalization, and mortality.  Symptoms often lead to behavioral or medication treatment strategies with variable results.  Severity of psychiatric symptoms is associated with severity of brain pathology in Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body disease, and related disorders.

Objectives:

The activity is designed to help:

  • Specify the common types of neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

  • Describe the evidence supporting non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment strategies for these symptoms.

  • Recognize the associations of neuropsychiatric symptoms with brain pathology in specific subtypes of neurodegenerative disorders in the Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders spectrum.
