The fourth year combines the goals of developing leadership abilities with consolidating clinical knowledge and clinical skills. Consisting primarily of elective time, past residents have taken advantage of this flexibility by continuing outpatient clinics and supervision, spending time on the consultation service, ECT electives, continuing or developing research projects, returning to an inpatient unit as a junior attending, or any other structured clinical experience that furthers career development.
The only required rotation during the PGY4 year is forensic psychiatry.
Call Schedule:
PGY4s continue to take weekday and weekend call to assist with supervision of PGY1s and PGY2s, but the total call requirement is reduced. On average, PGY4s will take 14 weekday calls and 3 weekend call days a year. PGY4s also take outpatient home call 2 weeks during the year. See the PGY3 description for more information about this home call.
Didactics:
Seminars are designed to complement these clinical experiences and to prepare the residents for practice and professional growth after graduation.
