Observation Students
Students interested in completing PT/OT observation hours at VUMC must fill out an application through Vanderbilt Observational Experience (VOE). This program is strictly observational only; no hands-on patient care is permitted.
Requests to complete observation hours are considered on a case-by-case basis and a preceptor must be confirmed in advance. Applications must be received at least 30 days before the anticipated observation experience date unless a preceptor has pre-approved prior arrangements.
Observation confirmations may take longer than 30 days to confirm. If observation requests cannot be fulfilled, the applicant will be notified by email.
Observation is limited in some clinical areas for the safety of patients and observers. No high school students are permitted in the operating rooms, cath labs, emergency departments, pediatric intensive care units or the Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital.
There are no application fees, however, Non-Vanderbilt staff member applicants 18+ are responsible for background check costs (minimum $36.25).
