November 2023 VUH Healthcare Heroes

  • Nurse Leader of the Quarter: Nicole Tan, Clinical Staff Leader – 9 North - From Nicole’s nomination: Nicole is a great leader-she goes out of her way to help you no matter what the problem is. She's understanding, caring, and compassionate. Nicole is a CSL that helps with toileting, bathing, ambulation, lab drawings, medications administration and admissions. She always goes above and beyond to help. Nicole has helped me multiple times when my sister passed away-she was the most caring person on the unit and called me every day to make sure I was ok. She is always willing to work with getting your requested time off and goes above and beyond in everything she does for us. I am grateful for her every day, and I learned, so is everyone else. I hope you see fit to give her this award as she exemplifies the term "Above and Beyond".
  • Nurse of the Quarter: Ariana Jacquez, RN - CVICU - From Ariana’s nomination: Ari and I worked together during a very difficult transition to comfort care. She provided not only excellent clinical care to a very sick patient, but she went out of her way to help the care team and the patient's family in a way that I have not seen before. She was a true partner for me during one of the most delicate family conversations I have had in some time and was amazingly supportive of the patient and his wishes. Her extra effort to provide this person with the dignity that they deserved at the end of their life, while supporting their family and the rest of the care team, did not go unnoticed. She approached what seemed like an impossible situation in a way that showed maturity beyond her years. Every time I am on service, she is helping her neighbor with a turn, helping to get back to bed, or helping to land a patient. The acuity in the CVICU is by far the highest in the hospital. I think that we have a nursing staff that is very willing to help their compatriots, but I can say that Ari stands out to me as someone who is always paying attention to the needs of others. Some of this I think is in her nature. She is upbeat and funny and brings some levity to situations that otherwise can be pretty trying.
  • Ancillary Staff Member of the Quarter: Hayden Honeycutt, Host – Food and Nutrition - From Hayden’s nomination: Hayden goes out of his way to ensure the correct meal is delivered to the correct patient. Today, he rounded with the charge nurse to close the communication loop and ensure a patient who was not in the room at the time of meal delivery was discharged so they wouldn't miss their meal. Hayden models VUMC Credo by conducting himself professionally, always knocking on the patient's door and asking, "Nutrition, may I come in?" He exhibits a sense of ownership by doing his job efficiently and effectively, ensuring patients are fed in a timely manner. He also communicates with patients and teammates by letting them know if a patient is not in their room during meal rounding.
