Outgoing Animal Shipments
The IACUC Policy “Transport of Animals To/From VUMC, VU, and VA-TVHS” mandates that all transport of animals to and from Vanderbilt must be coordinated through the DAC using an approved animal transportation vendor. Exceptions to the policy must be requested in writing and approved by the Vanderbilt IACUC.
The DAC contracts the services of a company experienced in transporting animals to conduct most animal shipments to and from Vanderbilt. The company uses enclosed, climate-controlled trucks and arranges transportation to/from approved vendors, other institutions, and, in the case of air shipments, regional airports. On occasion, other commercial carriers or vendor-maintained trucks are used.
Below is the procedure for outgoing animal shipments:
1. PI must complete the Outgoing Animal Shipment Request.
2. Material Transfer Agreements (MTA) may be needed for the transfer of animals between institutions and are the responsibility of the PI. Please work with the sending/receiving institution to determine if a MTA is needed. All correspondence regarding MTAs should be managed through the Office of Technology Transfer (615-343‐2430).
3. Use the Rodent Crating Instructions to prepare the shipment.
