Welcome Vanderbilt Residency Applicants
Each year we look forward to many special resident events, but, application season has a certain anticipation and energy that makes this time of year exciting for all. Feel free to explore our website and give feedback. If you cannot locate an item, please contact our General Surgery Residency Staff with any questions and comments.
Here is a brief outline of the process: Every applicant folder is carefully screened using a 55-point screening system involving letters, transcript, activities, research, USMLE scores, and awards.
We generally receive applications from ~ 800 graduates of US medical schools and an equal number of international graduates. We interview ~ 80 candidates; we match 8. We take your time and interest seriously.
- We have 4 interview days scheduled for the Match season: November 14, 2023, November 17, 2023, December 15, 2023, and December 19, 2023. All interviews will be conducted virtually via Zoom. Each candidate is interviewed by two faculty members and a senior/chief resident and has a short chat with a chair and a program director. Interview day includes a program presentation, and a brief virtual tour.
- We have an informal gathering from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm CST on the evening prior to the actual interview day, hosted by our residents via Zoom. Families and significant others are welcome.
- For interview dates on Fridays – November 17, 2023, and December 15, 2023 – we have virtual Grand Rounds via Zoom Webinar from 7:00 am to 8:00 am CST. All candidates are invited to attend.
- One of our goals is for you to have free and ready access to our residents. We think they are "satisfied customers" and our best advertisement.
