Dr. Sten H. Vermund was the founding director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH). The Sten H. Vermund Awards for Excellence in Global Health recognize Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the health of all people through distinguished global health scholarship, education, training, and/or service. This annual $1,500 award recognizes significant achievement in the field of global health during academic training at VUSM.

Each year, medical and graduate students prove that global health isn’t only about seeing patients. The work of improving healthcare requires work at all levels and across many fields. For this reason, the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health offers the Graduate Certificate in Global Health, an interdisciplinary program that draws students from across campus to study global health issues through the lenses of their field of study.

Vanderbilt Lab Donation Supports Medical Education in Liberia
At the end of March, the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health received a long-awaited message from Liberia – the 40-foot shipping container of medical books and other laboratory equipment donated by the Vanderbilt School of Medicine had survived it’s journey across the ocean and arrived at its final destination, the University of Liberia. The letter signaled the end of a nearly year-long donation effort at Vanderbilt and the beginning of new opportunities for current and future medical students in Liberia.
