Welcome to General Surgery Residency Program at Vanderbilt

The Vanderbilt General Surgery Residency Program housed in the Department of General Surgery is comprised of teams of specialty surgeons and researchers working closely with one another to discover and reveal the latest medical and surgical innovations, while teaching and mentoring our residents the many facets of surgery.

This collaboration of disciplines allows us to provide an array of conventional and unique surgical services to the entire Mid-South region resulting in outstanding outcomes for patients and for residents a unique unmatched experience in a highly ranked academic medical institution.

Vanderbilt's winning qualities include our community and regional location, nationally highly ranked medical and surgical programs, high quality faculty and funded research programs. Vanderbilt's hometown Nashville is a vibrant, energetic community that embraces innovation and invention, of which Vanderbilt is a major part.

Outstanding Collegiality and Mentorship

Vanderbilt's General Surgery Residency Program is approved by the Surgical Residency Review Committee (S-RRC) to graduate eight chief residents annually. Most but not all chiefs pursue fellowship training. On entering, most residents at Vanderbilt profess an interest in pursuing a career in "academic surgery" in one of its many iterations including basic science, translational research, outcomes, quality improvement, health services research, clinical effectiveness research, education, or even global surgery.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center boasts 1,741 total beds across 7 hospitals. Vanderbilt's 56 adult and 16 pediatric ORs enable us to perform over 78,000 surgeries annually. The Section of Surgical Sciences has more than 240 full-time clinical faculty and 177 residents and fellows. Twelve adult specialties are nationally rank best or high-performing and our children's hospital achieved 10 out of 10 nationally ranked pediatric specialties and is among the nation's "Best Children's Hospitals".

Vanderbilt has the tradition and reputation of training residents who can operate with confidence and competence. Our recently graduated chiefs averaged 1100 cases and exceeded operative requirements in all defined ACGME categories.

Your clinical experience pairs trainees with learning partners and surgeon mentors in an organization focused on high quality, compassionate, and innovative patient care.

Overall Vanderbilt's preeminent surgical programs provide a comprehensive academic and clinical experience for surgeons, teaching faculty and trainees resulting in compassionate yet innovative patient care.
