General Surgery Residency Program
The Vanderbilt General Surgery Residency Program comprises teams of specialty surgeons and researchers working closely with one another to advancing medical and surgical care while teaching and mentoring our residents.

Outstanding Collegiality and Mentorship
Vanderbilt's General Surgery Residency Program is approved by the Surgical Residency Review Committee (S-RRC) to graduate eight chief residents annually. Most but not all chiefs pursue fellowship training. On entering, most residents at Vanderbilt profess an interest in pursuing a career in "academic surgery" in one of its many iterations including basic science, translational research, outcomes, quality improvement, health services research, clinical effectiveness research, education, or even global surgery.
Vanderbilt Health is the region's most comprehensive health system, with 8 hospitals, more than 180 clinics, a top-10 National Institutes of Health-funded research program, and more than 150 medical and surgical residencies and fellowships. Our system includes Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center), Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, a Level 1 Trauma Center and growing number of operating rooms and inpatient units.
Vanderbilt has the tradition and reputation of training residents who can operate with confidence and competence. Our recently graduated chiefs averaged 1100 cases and exceeded operative requirements in all defined ACGME categories.
