The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) oversees the public domain name system (DNS). Currently, the system includes 22 generic top-level domains (gTLDs) such as .COM, .ORG, and .NET.
ICANN approved a plan more than two years ago to add hundreds of new gTLDs to the DNS. The new gTLD categories include:

- Geographic (85 TLDs)
- Money & Finance (32 TLDs)
- Culture & Life Style (113 TLDs)
- Sports & Recreation (44 TLDs)
- Technology (53 TLDs)
- Entertainment (42 TLDs)
- Food & Shopping (33 TLDs)
- Professions (38 TLDs)
- Health & Fitness (16 TLDs)
- Retail (38 TLDs)
- Education (19 TLDs)
- Government & Policies (7 TLDs)
- Travel & Leisure (12 TLDs)
- Faith (5 TLDs)
