Arthur Fleischer, M.D., Medical Director of Ultrasound and Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor, Departments of Radiology and Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN), received the Laurence (Larry) A. Mack Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) Annual Meeting held earlier this month in San Diego. He was recognized for his contributions to the clinical applications of ultrasound through teaching and research.
The award’s namesake, Larry Mack, M.D., was the Director of the Ultrasound Division at the University of Washington, served on the National Commission on Ultrasound, and was well known for his clinical innovations and commitment to training in ultrasound.
“My interest in ultrasound began in the mid-1960s,” said Fleischer. “Since then, I’ve had the tremendous opportunity to learn from my mentors, and to share my passion with colleagues, medical students, radiology and OBGYN residents, and sonography students around the world. I am honored to receive this award, and would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues for creating a supportive and creative environment, and to my family for their constant support and encouragement.”
Fleischer has been actively involved in multiple research projects throughout his career. His clinical research has contributed to new clinical applications of ultrasound, including transvaginal sonography, color Doppler sonography and contrast agents (microbubbles) for oncologic diagnosis and potentially treatment. He is involved in several NIH-funded clinical trials involving early detection of ovarian cancer with contrast-enhanced transvaginal sonography, use of contrasted sonography for enhanced characterization of liver lesions and detection, and quantification of lymphedema in patients with head and neck cancers. He has authored more than 200 scientific papers and 24 books, including his most recently published edition of “Fleischer’s Sonography in Obstetrics and Gynecology: Textbook and Teaching Cases,” which is referenced internationally by his peers.
Fleischer is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, as well as a Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), American College of Radiology and the SRU. He is past President of the Society for the Advancement of Women’s Imaging, and past member of the AIUM Board of Governors.
He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Emory University 1973, and received his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia in 1976. Upon the completion of his M.D., he began his radiology training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center before becoming faculty. Throughout his tenure, Fleischer has received the CANDLE Award for outstanding mentoring and teaching of medical students, the Dr. Frank Boehm Award for Excellence in Continuing Medical Education, the Distinguished Alumnus from Medical College of Georgia, and the William J. Fry Award from the AIUM for his contributions to ultrasound. He continues to contribute his knowledge and expertise as member of the advisory board for the Center for Ultrasound Education at the Medical College of Georgia.
