A recently published article in the Journal of the American College of Radiology, co-authored by two VUMC Radiology faculty, aims to help guide educators when creating safe learning spaces, from looking at how doctors facilitate case conferences to creating bonds between student and teacher to help build trust.
“We were thrilled to learn that our article—Strategies to Create a Psychologically Safe Radiology Learning Space—was accepted for publication,” says Lori Deitte, MD, FACR, FAUR, Professor and Vice Chair of Education, Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Vice President for Continuous Professional Development, Office of Health Science Education. “It is essential for educators to role model empathy, support, and inclusion to elevate our learners, their performance and ultimately, patient care.”
The strategies involve “cooling a hot seat” and making sure team members feel safe to take risks without the fear of embarrassment or punishment.
"In our training programs, we strive to cultivate an inclusive and supportive culture that fosters psychological safety to support our learners," says Steven Harris, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Diagnostic Radiology Residency Associate Program Director.
Dr. Deitte and Dr. Harris co-authored the article with Petra Lewis, MBBS, of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Judith Gadde, DO, MBA, of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
