Neuroradiology fellow Courtney Tomblinson, M.D., recently participated in the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) Valerie P. Jackson Education Fellowship. As the 2018 Jackson Fellow, Tomblinson visited ACR’s headquarters in Reston, Virginia, where she received a five-day, comprehensive overview of the ACR’s educational programs, and explored the resources available to ACR members and members-in-training.
“I spent a phenomenal week at the ACR headquarters learning about educational content generation, design and implementation,” Tomblinson wrote in her personal recap for the ACR Bulletin. “My experience was embedded within the ACR Commission on Publications and Lifelong Learning, led by [Vanderbilt Radiology faculty] Lori Deitte, M.D., FACR, chair of the ACR Commission on Publications and Lifelong Learning, and Becky Haines, senior director of ACR Press.”
During her visit, Tomblinson spent most of her time with members of the ACR Press team, and learned about content development for a variety of the society’s resources, including the ACR Bulletin, Journal of the American College of Radiology, Case in Point and ImageWisely®. In addition, she worked on a project compiling various forms of digital content and visual aids to enhance teaching and learning for ACR members.
“Though there is no replacement for a good solid textbook or didactic, I sought to learn how tools such as animated graphics and visual abstracts can be implemented as adjuncts into medical education to help us learn and teach better in the appropriate context,” she added. “I would highly recommend this fellowship experience to anyone who has interest in medical education, journalism or graphic design.”
Upon completion of her training in July 2019, Tomblinson will join Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Department of Radiology as faculty in neuroradiology section. Prior to coming to Vanderbilt, she completed her residency at Mayo Clinic’s Scottsdale, Arizona, campus where she served as Chief Resident and as Chairman of the Radiological Society of North America’s Resident and Fellow Committee.
