Department of Radiology faculty, staff and trainees recently volunteered their time and efforts at Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.
A nonprofit organization dedicated to feeding hungry men, women and children, Second Harvest delivers food to 490 partner organizations and to families in 46 counties across Middle Tennessee.
During the event, Vanderbilt Radiology volunteers worked on compiling bags for Second Harvest’s BackPack program. One of its many feeding programs, the program provides more than 6,000 easy-to-prepare meals for Middle Tennessee school children that may not have resources for food over the weekend. Each bag consisted of two entrées, two boxes each of juice and cereal, shelf-stable milk and a snack.
“Our team assembled and boxed nearly 1,000 bags of non-perishable food for teachers to put into backpacks on Fridays so students have food for the weekend,” said Lori Deitte, M.D., Professor of Radiology and Vice Chair of Education, Department of Radiology. “We are grateful to Second Harvest for their leadership and commitment to solve hunger issues in our community.”
The Second Harvest volunteer coordinator who oversaw the department’s participation said that one in five kids don’t know where their next meal is coming from. The BackPack program, specifically, delivers bags to children in 68 programs throughout Middle Tennessee.
