Second-year radiology resident Drs. Courtney Raybon and Noran Taylor were recently awarded World Conference on Interventional Oncology (WCIO) 2018 Fellows and Resident-in-Training scholarships by the Society of Interventional Oncology (SIO).
The scholarship was related to their research on the safety and efficacy of Y90 radioembolization in patients with Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET) who are being concurrently treated with everolimus.
Daniel Brown, M.D., FSIR, Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, and Interventional Oncology section chief, provided mentorship and guidance to Drs. Raybon and Taylor throughout their project. He said everolimus is a standard biologic agent for a subset of patients with NET, and Y90 is used for a separate, but overlapping subset.
“This work is the first described experience of patients who had contemporaneous treatment with both agents,” said Dr. Brown. “Our group found that the combined treatment was well-tolerated with very little additional toxicity and reasonable response. It’s great that this type of novel approach to patient well-being is being pursued by our residents.”
Drs. Raybon and Taylor’s award includes a stipend from the SIO to attend WCIO 2018 this June in Boston, Massachusetts, as well as a complimentary one-year membership to the association.
