Third-year Vanderbilt Radiology resident Courtney Raybon, M.D., and neuroradiology fellow Courtney Tomblinson, M.D., have been awarded member-in-training travel stipends in the amount of $1,200 each to attend the 2018 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting next month in Chicago.
Tomblinson and Raybon currently serve as Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively, of the RSNA Resident and Fellow Committee (RFC), whose members help promote RSNA programs for trainees, provide input on curriculum and career advancement for trainees, and more. The RFC is made up of 30 trainees across the United States and Canada. Fourth-year resident Meaghan Magarik, M.D., Ph.D., is also a member. Raybon says all RFC committee members are awarded the stipend.
“The stipend supports trainee attendance at our annual committee meeting. In person attendance is vital to the successful achievement of the goals and objectives of the committee,” said Raybon. “Not only does it allow for more effective and efficient communication and planning among members, it gives us an opportunity to develop interpersonal relationships, which are essential to our ability to work together to achieve common goals.”
During the meeting, RFC members organize a half-day Resident and Fellow's Symposium, host a Meet and Greet Luncheon where trainees can meet leaders in the field, participate in talks on Navigating RSNA in the Discovery Theater, support the Diagnosis Live Resident Competition and more.
“I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to attend both the RFC committee meeting and the RSNA annual meeting,” added Raybon. “The educational value of the annual meeting truly cannot be overstated.”
Prior to starting her fellowship, Tomblinson completed her residency at Mayo Clinic’s Scottsdale, Arizona, campus. In addition to being Chief Resident, she served a two-year term as RSNA RFC Chairman. Raybon will succeed Tomblinson as Chairman following the conclusion of this year’s Annual Meeting.
"In the past two years, I've been fortunate to lead this diverse group and I look forward to seeing the direction of the RFC with Courtney at the helm,” said Tomblinson. “Of all the things I've learned, the power of listening to my team has been the most important. This experience has been professionally and personally rewarding, and will undoubtedly prepare me for a career in academia."
It was recently announced that Tomblinson will join Vanderbilt as faculty in the neuroradiology section upon completion of her fellowship in July 2019.
