VUMC Radiology is proud to share that Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Wellington Pham, PhD, has been named as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
“I am so honored and humbled to be elected as a Fellow of AAAS,” Dr. Pham said. “I look forward to the opportunity to work with my colleagues to fulfill AAAS’ mission and to work for the advancement of science and technology.”
Dr. Pham was selected for the 2022 class of fellows, joining other scientists and professionals “whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications in service to society have distinguished them among their peers and colleagues.”
“The ranks of AAAS fellows include the likes of W.E.B. Du Bois, Thomas Edison and Margaret Mead, in addition to many of the most respected minds in contemporary science and innovation,” Vanderbilt University Chancellor Daniel Diermeier said. “The election of these esteemed faculty members is a great honor for them personally and an honor for Vanderbilt as well. I heartily congratulate this year’s fellows on behalf of the entire university community.”
“From physics to chemistry to neuroscience, and from computer science to radiology, our newest AAAS fellows are making a difference not only through their foundational discoveries, but also by translating them to solutions with meaningful societal benefit,” Vanderbilt University Provost C. Cybele Raver said. “Their extraordinary achievements help make Vanderbilt a highest-caliber center of discovery and innovation, and I am proud to call these trailblazing scientists my colleagues.”
The AAAS is the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society and a leading publisher of cutting-edge research. With the mission to advance science for the benefit of society, the AAAS plays a critical role by promoting innovations needed to address the unmet needs in many areas, including healthcare, food, energy, climate change, and global security.
All AAAS Fellows are expected to meet the commonly held standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity. Newly elected Fellows are recognized for their extraordinary achievements across disciplines, from research, teaching, and technology, to administration in academia, industry and government, to excellence in communicating and interpreting science to the public.
Dr. Pham has been a medicinal chemist for over 20 years, dedicating his research to developing molecular probes for biomarker imaging. His laboratory is well recognized for synthesizing multimodal probes, including optical, MRI, and PET agents. His current research interests include the discovery of biomarkers and imaging probes, combined with delivery technologies dedicated to cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
