Earlier this year, Department of Radiology faculty Lucy Spalluto, M.D., and Stephanie Spottswood, M.D., cofounded Women in Radiology (WIR), a department program that strives to provide women with the knowledge and confidence to achieve career success and to take on leadership positions.
As part of the program’s ongoing efforts to support and engage female faculty, WIR today launched “In Focus,” a Q&A-style interview that highlights and celebrates achievements of the department’s female faculty.
“It provides an opportunity to learn more about career paths of the women in our department, what motivates them to succeed and the advice they have for others,” said Dr. Spalluto.
The inaugural edition of “In Focus” features Dominique Delbeke, M.D., Ph.D., one of six female professors in the department. In her 26-year career, she has established herself as a leader not only the department, but in the fields of radiology and nuclear medicine. She was recently awarded the Presidential Distinguished Educator Award at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) annual meeting. In addition, she has coedited five textbooks, presented lectures at more than 100 national and 35 international meetings and has served as the President for the SNMMI.
In her interview, Dr. Delbeke discusses her motivations and achievements as a female in radiology and nuclear medicine, and shares career advice for her female colleagues.
“You have to be engaged in your career and confident about your abilities,” she said. “That includes doing research in your field, writing papers, collaborating with others on projects, and joining your medical society to expand your education and horizons.”
