Vanderbilt Radiology residents and faculty recently participated in the Tennessee Radiological Society (TRS) Annual Scientific Meeting and Day on the Hill activities.
Unlike previous years, this year’s meeting brought together radiologists and trainees from Tennessee and Kentucky for a joint scientific meeting on topics ranging from health care economics and policy to emergency and breast imaging. Radiology faculty Drs. Lori Deitte, Aaron Jessop, Ryan Muller, Glynis Sacks, Kim Sandler and Lucy Spalluto were among the 14 speakers who presented at the meeting.
“The TRS meeting was an opportunity to network with local radiologists as well as learn more about the medicolegal and business-related topics in radiology,” said Kelsey Guerreso, M.D., first-year diagnostic radiology resident. “There were also several high-quality lectures, many of them given by our own faculty, that I found especially helpful as I prepare for my first year of call!”
Residents who attended the meeting also had the opportunity to participate in the TRS Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) meeting, Executive Board Election and Resident and Fellow Poster Competition. Drs. Casey Cable, Guerreso and Shuai Yuan were elected President, Vice President and Secretary, respectively, for the upcoming academic year during the Executive Board Election.
“I'm excited about the incoming officers and the great job they're going to do,” said Sam Pevzner, M.D., Ph.D., third-year diagnostic radiology resident and outgoing TRS RFS Secretary. “As a resident, I've attended every TRS-related activity and have wonderful memories. I think the new officers will continue to make sure these events continue to happen, and possibly create some new ones.”
In addition to the meeting, several residents participated in the TRS Day on the Hill activities where they met with state legislators to discuss the role of radiology in health care, as well as policies directly impacting the field of radiology.
“Unfortunately, many legislators have a very limited idea of what a radiologist is,” said Cable. “As such, it is important to build these relationships so that when more relevant bills are introduced, they have a face and a story to go with the specialty, and will be more likely to act in our favor.”
As president of the TRS RFS, Cable says his goal for the year is to increase resident involvement in the TRS RFS, and to improve resident knowledge of educational resources available to them through organizations, including the TRS, American College of Radiology and Radiological Society of North America.
“It is increasingly important to have an ‘extra’ skill set beyond your diagnostic skills when marketing yourself for jobs, and these organizations provide some amazing opportunities to develop skills in public policy, economics, artificial intelligence and more, which will be very beneficial to your future radiology practice.”
Other residents in attendance included Drs. Ryan Adams, Patrick Couture, Galina Mamaliga, LeAnn Shannon and Bill Winter.
