Planz Named Director of Grand Rounds

Virginia Planz, M.D., Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology, has recently been named Director of Grand Rounds. She succeeds Jeff Creasy, M.D., Professor of Radiology and Neuroradiology Section Chief, in her new role effective July 1, 2019.

“I have enjoyed the opportunity provided to me to coordinate such a distinguished string of Grand Rounds speakers over the last several years,” said Creasy. “This is an exciting opportunity for junior faculty to get involved with speakers from across country, and I am very excited to pass the torch to Dr. Planz who I know will do an excellent job.”

As Director of Grand Rounds, Planz will oversee monthly educational programming by curating all Radiology Grand Rounds lectures, including the Grand Rounds Name lectures, Diversity Grand Rounds Lectureship and Women in Radiology Lectureship series. With the objective to promote knowledge sharing and educational growth amongst members in the department, she will also serve as the departmental host, connecting learners with invited speakers through organized meetings and other networking opportunities.

“Grand Rounds is a critical component in the pursuit of continuing medical education for faculty and trainees because it provides exposure to ideas and experiences from other institutions and disciplines,” said Planz. “Having a consistent, monthly opportunity to learn from thought leaders and innovators, both within and outside the field of radiology, broadens our perspectives and adds to a more well-rounded educational foundation.”

She says that she plans to continue ongoing efforts to expand the scope of the curriculum by building a diverse lecture series with traditional and non-traditional topics relevant to all members of the department, including patient care, research and technologic advancements in imaging.

Members of the Vanderbilt University and Medical Center communities, including medical students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff, are encouraged to attend the Grand Rounds lectures. Paula McClain, Senior Administrative Assistant, will support Planz in the planning and implementation of all Grand Rounds-related events.

Planz joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2018 as faculty in the Body Imaging section following the completion of her fellowship in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She completed her residency training at Wake Forest Baptist Health where she also served as chief resident in her PGY-5 year.
