Cari Motuzas, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Director, recently completed Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s (VUMC) 2019 Mid-Career Leadership Development Program.
Launched in 2017, the program was initially designed for faculty in the Department of Medicine. This year, with support from VUMC President and CEO Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, and Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Faculty Development, Maureen Gannon, PhD, the yearlong program rolled out for associate professors across the Medical Center. Dr. Motuzas was among 23 faculty selected to participate this year.
Comprised of monthly workshops and seminars, the program included topics related to leadership capabilities, conflict management, strategic planning, mentorship and communication.
“This program has given me new tools to succeed as I develop the necessary skillset to lead and guide our trainees,” said Dr. Motuzas. “I have learned so much from this group of incredible leaders.”
At the conclusion of the program, participants presented individual, strategic capstone projects that highlighted the skills and knowledge they acquired throughout the program. For her project, “Always Improving in Radiology Residency Training,” Dr. Motuzas pitched a strategic plan to program leaders, as well as Department of Radiology Professor and Chair, Reed Omary, MD, MS. The plan outlined new opportunities to engage medical students, how to maximize the educational experience, and the impact residents can make by giving back to the program.
“I’d like to congratulate Dr. Motuzas on completing her capstone project,” said Dr. Omary. “She is a committed advocate for resident education, and I look forward to seeing how she applies what she learned to the benefit of our training programs moving forward.”
