Emergency Radiology Fellowship

Emergency Radiology Fellowship

VUMC offers a one-year, non-ACGME-accredited clinical fellowship/instructorship in Emergency Radiology. The objective of the fellowship is to provide a broad exposure to adult and pediatric emergency diagnostic imaging in order to produce comprehensively trained emergency radiologists, who are prepared for careers in academics or private practice.

VUMC offers ample opportunities for learning high level emergency radiology:

  • Adult and pediatric tertiary care hospitals, both with Level 1 trauma centers
  • Over 140,000 emergency department radiology studies annually
  • 3 in-house Emergency Radiology attendings and 2 radiology residents overnight each night
  • Diverse fellowship training backgrounds among current faculty: Emergency (2), MSK (2), Neuro (2), Pediatric (2), Breast Imaging (1)

Our fellow/instructors will work with dedicated Emergency Radiology faculty, as well as subspecialty trained faculty in other sections (including Neuroradiology, Pediatric Radiology, Abdominal Imaging, Cardiothoracic Imaging, and Musculoskeletal Radiology). They will be expected to work three 4-week blocks of overnight Emergency Radiology, with the remainder of the year spent rotating through other sections in the Department of Radiology with an emphasis on emergency imaging studies.

  • Thank you for your interest in the VUMC Emergency Radiology Fellowship. We will adhere to the SCARD guidelines for this recruitment season.

All fellowship interviews will be virtual. Please reach out to the fellowship team if you have any questions. We look forward to receiving your application.

Please send all documents (including application, CV, personal statement, transcripts, USMLE Board Scores, three recommendation letters) to:

  • Fellowship trainees have a primary appointment with GME and a secondary appointment as a Clinical Instructor within the Department of Radiology.

As a non-accredited (ACGME) fellowship, there is an opportunity to develop increasing responsibilities and independence. In addition, there is a generous benefit package with a book/meeting allowance and a 403b retirement plan.

In-house moonlighting is an option, though not required, and can be advantageous to maintain skills in other subspecialty areas.

  • The Department of Emergency Medicine offers several weekly conferences including a multidisciplinary trauma conference, an Emergency Medicine case conference, and an Emergency Ultrasound conference.

  • Optional in-house moonlighting opportunities will be available.

  • Our fellow/instructors will spend three (minimum) 4-week blocks working overnight shifts in the Emergency Department with our Emergency Radiology faculty. The emphasis will be on high volume weekend shifts.

Through the remainder of the year, fellow/instructors will be expected to work one evening Emergency Radiology shift weekly (approximately 1-9PM, with the first half spent on clinical rotation and the second half spent in the Emergency Department).

  • In addition to clinical responsibilities, fellows are encouraged to pursue research interests during their training. There are opportunities for collaboration with the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Sciences, Department of Emergency Medicine, and Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. Fellows also contribute to resident and medical student education by participating with section faculty in noon conference lectures and daily teaching during the routine clinical work flow.
