The Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences is excited to share the promotion of Melissa Hilmes, MD, to Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences.
Dr. Hilmes, who also holds an appointment in the Department of Pediatrics, has been with our Pediatric Radiology section since 2007 and currently serves as the department's Director of Medical Student Education.
A graduate of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Dr. Hilmes completed both her radiology residency and fellowship in pediatric radiology at the University of Michigan. During her time at Michigan, Dr. Hilmes served as chief resident and as a member of the resident selection committee.
After training, Dr. Hilmes joined a radiology practice in Dallas, Texas, as a staff radiologist. Following her time in Dallas, Dr. Hilmes came back to Vanderbilt, this time as faculty in the Department of Radiology.
Since then, she has served VUMC Radiology in many ways, including as a representative on multiple pediatric case conferences, course director of numerous medical student electives, and as the department's Director of Medical Student Education.
Dr. Hilmes' dedication to radiology education has been noticed and highlighted by many. She received the John S. Sergent Award for Teaching Medical and Graduate Students from the VU School of Medicine in 2023, and the Miller Immersion Award in 2024, which is given by the graduating class of medical students for excellence in teaching.
Congratulations, Dr. Hilmes.
