Lucy Spalluto, M.D., Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences and co-founder of the department’s Women in Radiology (WIR) group, was recently awarded the 2017 Association of University Radiologists’ (AUR) Joseph E. and Nancy O. Whitley Award for her manuscript, “A Leadership Intervention to Further the Training of Female Faculty (LIFT-OFF) in Radiology.”
Dr. Spalluto will present her manuscript at the AUR Annual Meeting in May in Hollywood, Florida, where she will also be formally presented with a certificate and a $1,000 honorarium for her commitment to education and innovation in radiology.
“The Whitley Award’s recognition of LIFT-OFF demonstrates the importance of faculty development programs for women in radiology,” said Dr. Spalluto.
Developed and implemented by Dr. Spalluto and fellow WIR co-founder and radiology faculty Stephanie Spottswood, M.D., LIFT-OFF is designed to provide information and executive skills required for female faculty to achieve academic career success, assume leadership positions and network within and outside of the department. In an effort to recruit and retain women in academic radiology, the initiative will eventually expand to include fellows, residents and medical students.
Co-authors of the manuscript included Vanderbilt Radiology faculty and professors Drs. Spottswood and Lori Deitte, VUSM faculty Dr. Charlene Dewey and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Student Alexander Chern.
“Dr. Spalluto’s leadership in radiology includes outstanding efforts in promoting opportunities for women as well as providing mentorship for the next generation of women radiologists,” said Dr. Spottswood. “Her commitment to our department and efforts around WIR make her very deserving of the 2017 Whitley Award.”
