Second-year diagnostic radiology resident LeAnn Shannon, M.D., was awarded the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) 2018 Certificate of Merit for her educational exhibit, “Histoplasmosis in the 21st century: new concepts in epidemiology, imaging, diagnosis, and therapy.”
Held in Washington, D.C., the 118th ARRS Annual Meeting welcomed radiology faculty, trainees and administrators from across the country for a weeklong meeting comprised of more than 150 sessions and 500 electronic exhibits.
“Educational exhibits are typically only available to view during the conference in digital format, and therefore I did not plan on giving an actual presentation,” said Dr. Shannon. “However, shortly before the ARRS meeting, I was asked to present my exhibit as a Certificate of Merit award winner.”
She provided highlights of the exhibit during a brief oral presentation delivered during the Cardiothoracic Power Hour. The exhibit, which was coauthored by radiology faculty Adam Guttentag, M.D., demonstrated the importance of considering histoplasmosis in the differential diagnosis of thoracic diseases, regardless of geographic location. In addition, it provided education on recent advances in diagnostic work-up and reviewed imaging appearances of acute and chronic forms of the disease.
“Overall, I greatly enjoyed the meeting,” said Dr. Shannon. “In addition to my presentation, I had the opportunity to attend several lectures spanning a variety of topics, all of which have helped me become more efficient in my search patterns and differentials, especially when time is of the essence while on call.”
