Mary Ellen Koran, MD, PHD, studied biomedical engineering at Duke University, and then moved to Vanderbilt to join the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). She completed her PhD in Human Genetics, where she used images as outcome variables in genetic studies of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Koran was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, was active as a Student Advisor for the MSTP, and graduated with the Vanderbilt Founder’s Medal. She matched into Stanford's Radiology Residency Program, where she was served as Chief Resident and pursued a dual board pathway in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. While at Stanford she received the Etta Kalin Moskowitz Research Award and the RSNA Trainee Research Prize. Dr. Koran joined the faculty at Vanderbilt in 2021 and developed the amyloid and tau PET program for Vanderbilt's exploratory Alzheimer's Center. She received grant funding from the Alzheimer's Association and the NIH through the K12 mechanism while faculty here, and then was recruited to Mayo Clinic in Arizona, where she is continuing to develop her research program in imaging genetics of Alzheimer's Disease.
