Douglass B. Clayton, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Urologic Surgery. He received his medical degree from the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center before completing a Residency in Urologic Surgery at the University of Alabama. He then went on to complete a two-year fellowship in Pediatric Urology at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
Now in his 5th of year practice, Dr. Clayton focuses his efforts on children with general pediatric urology problems and myelomeningocele while incorporating the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, including advanced robotic surgery.
Dr. Clayton has a significant research commitment and was recently selected to receive funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for a K08 career development award. During this 5 year training grant, he will be mentored by Dr. Volker H. Haase, an Associate Professor appointment in the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension. The grant will focus on the role of hypoxic signaling pathways in the bladder during injury and inflammation. He also serves as a rotating member for the Surgical Outcomes Center for Kids Scientific Committee.
