Kimberly Maciolek, ENDO Fellow

Hi Kimberly, tell us a little bit about where you grew up and your journey here to Nashville! 

It’s been a slow migration toward warmer weather! I grew up in rural Wisconsin outside of Milwaukee. I moved to Madison, Wisconsin, for undergrad and medical school. Go Badgers! 👐🏻 I then moved to Charlottesville, Virginia for residency and now Nashville for fellowship.  

What inspired you to train in Endourology?   

Endourologists use the best tech - different lasers, disposable instruments and robots - to treat a variety of urologic pathology via the most minimally invasive means. 

Where do you think you will end up landing after fellowship is over?

Keeping options open so far but maybe head back to the east coast. Nashville is growing on me!

Aside from work, what are your other interests? Any secret hobbies? Unusual skills?

I enjoy exploring Nashville and surrounding areas with my fiancé Nick and our corgi Georgia Cannoli. I’m a fan of road biking, kayaking, fly fishing and skeet shooting. I'm also trying to work on my golf swing. I love the science behind cooking. On most weekends, you’ll find me trying to conquer a new recipe using our pellet grill, sous vide or cast iron. Recent conquests have been beef jerky, smoked salsa, limoncello, apple pie and lasagna.

If you weren’t tackling kidney stones and large prostates, what career would you want to pursue?

Hmm...what could be better than urology?! I’d like to try cooking professionally or work as an engineer to design and test medical devices

Love it. What is your favorite endourology instrument and why??

Fire up the laser! So versatile and good for tackling stones, massive prostates, and even urothelial tumors. Close second is the Passport balloon … so satisfying to pop open a calyceal diverticula under direct vision to reveal its treasures of hidden stones
