Trainee Spotlight: September 2024

Trainee Spotlight

September 2024

Bradley Schott, MD

Bradley, I know you have been reluctant to do this, but thanks for taking some time to be our resident spotlight this month! How did you decide on Urology?

So a nerdy fact about me is that I really like the kidneys. All throughout undergrad and med school I just felt the physiology of the kidneys makes so much sense. They're just these little beans that keep the blood pressure in check, make sure fluid levels are fine, get rid of all the toxins. I tried Nephrology and hated it because it was a really sad specialty and I spent two weeks in dialysis clinic and I was like I don't want to do this. In medical school, we had a couple of attending Urologists from Houston Methodist teach in our anatomy lab and they talked about all the procedures and surgeries they did and how every day could be different. I liked how it was such a diverse field as I am someone who gets bored of doing the same thing for a long time. As I went through medical school nothing ever got close to comparing to Urology.

And now you’re here crushing Intern year! If you weren’t a doctor, what do you think you’d be doing with your life?

I would be a pilot. Like a private jet pilot. I think that would be so chill.

Well you can still be a pilot as a doctor you know. Dr. Kaufman flies planes!

Yeah, that’s terrifying. I don’t know if I trust myself to fly a plane right now. If I wasn’t a doctor and I had dedicated the nine years of my life to that instead, maybe there’d be a chance.

That’s a fair point. How has it been living in Nashville? Do you have any go to spots yet?

I love Nashville! It feels very similar to Texas, except the weather is slightly better. I also feel like the people here really have a lot of southern hospitality which is surprising because I though Texas was supposed to be known for southern hospitality. I just feel like everyone that I interact with is really interested and willing to talk. As far as favorite spots that I've gone to, when my parents visited we went to a place called the Listening Room where a bunch of songwriters play the songs that they have sold huge name artists. After we went the first time, we enjoyed it so much that we went back two days later and then I have gone back by myself as well. So that has been kind of my hidden gem that I’m not sure a lot of people know about that I’ve enjoyed getting to experience.

Are you really big into music?

I am yeah and I feel like it's just it's it's like crime against humanity to be in Nashville and not be interested in music here.

Very true! What kind of music do you like?

I am like an old country fan and then I went to a bar here and everyone was playing new country and I felt they were really good songs, so now I’m forcing myself to learn the new country. Other than that I’m a big fan of indie/folk like Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers.

Do you like going to the shows? What's your favorite concert you ever been to?

There’s a band called Hippo Campus out of Minnesota that played in Austin when I was in college and  like they're very similar to the whole John Bellion and AJR groups. Like the boy band, but not cringey Backstreet Boys- just good quality music.

Backstreet Boys cringey? Those are fighting words. Well I have never heard of them, I’ll have to look them up after then I'll let you let you know what I think! It's cool that your family has been able to come visit you. Do you have siblings?

I have an older sister. All my all my family lives in San Antonio. My sister and her husband have a one year old, He just turned one last week. We're planning a family trip over Christmas break as our family vacation because with medicine it's hard to try and find times that work for everyone.

That’s awesome. Where are y’all going?

We’re going to San Diego. They have a really good zoo and my sister really wants her son to see the zoo.  I really want to see the pandas, I believe that’s what their hot commodity is.

Yes! Although, when I was there two years ago and the pandas were gone.

Nooo!

Yeah, I don't know if it's like a seasonal thing, but Leah, Alice (former chief) and I walked around for a couple hours looking for the pandas when we went only to be told that there hadn’t been any pandas at the SD zoo for a while. So, I would double check that before you go haha.

What's your favorite vacation you've ever gone on?

When I was in elementary school my family did a trip to Hawaii. As a young kid just experiencing Hawaii was like being in a whole new world and I got to have so much fun. We biked down a volcano, we got to play golf along the shore of the ocean. It was such a great time.

I'm picturing you as a child in Hawaii and I'm seeing a shell choker necklace.  Please tell me that that is an image that possibly exists.

You could have told me that you were looking at my Facebook profile at pictures from back in middle school and I would have said yep, that was me.

Now I have to go find your Facebook. What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?

I went and hit range balls at the golf course for the first time this past weekend and it was invigorating. Part of my days off consists of cleaning my apartment because the place gets icky when  I'm not taking care of it and I have a cat and she makes the apartment very dirty. And so I like getting to finally get the chance to make things look and feel nice. Our intern class has been pretty good at trying to hang out for every other Sunday as usually Sundays are the days that most of us have off so we will get together for dinner and just catch up on how the week went.

What’s your cat's name?

If you're a nerd and watch Lord of the Rings, her name is Shadowfax (the king of the horses in LOTR) and if you're not a nerd and you're cool like that her name is just Shadow.

Rapid Fire!

What is your favorite movie? I would say the longest yard.

Favorite book? The Maze Runner series.

Favorite activity? Golfing.

Favorite drink? Right now a Moscow mule.  Makes me feel cultured. I have Titos imprinted copper glasses.

If you could only eat one type of cuisine for the rest of your life what would you pick? Italian. Chicken picatta is my absolute favorite dish.

Pancakes or waffles? I'm not a breakfast person. I don't like eating breakfast. It makes me feel full and too bloated. Whenever I was growing up I would always eat leftovers from the night before for breakfast, like chicken  tenders or lasagna.

I see, would you rather be at the beach or the mountains? The mountains. I ski and I want to learn how to snowboard, but I wanna go when other people are learning too so I’m not like the odd man out.

Window seat or aisle seat? The window seat. I gotta lean up against something and I usually don’t like when it’s a stranger sitting next to me.

Early bird or night owl? Night owl

Zombies or vampires? Zombies. That's a good question!

Marvel or DC? Marvel.  That's a bad question. Just a waste of a question. If I said DC, you would say I don't think you should be in the residency program anymore.
