The Department of Radiology recently hosted its annual Graduation Ceremony, celebrating nine residents and 15 fellows in the Class of 2019.
More than 160 faculty, staff and trainees, as well as families of those graduating, attended the event hosted for the second consecutive year at Sinema Restaurant + Bar. Reed Omary, M.D., M.S., Carol D. and Henry P. Pendergrass Professor and Chair, and Stephanie Kurita, M.D., Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology and Director of Alumni Relations and Development, kicked off the main programming of the event by welcoming guests and congratulating graduates before the presentation of the resident and fellowship certificates and special recognition awards.
“We are grateful to our graduates for their dedication to clinical care and our academic mission at Vanderbilt University Medical Center,” said Omary. “We also look forward to a future radiology that is shaped by their energy and ideas.”
Cari Motuzas, M.D.,Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Director, presented the resident certificates with support from Laura Elgin, Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Manager. Graduating residents and the fellowship programs they will be entering are provided below:

Upon completion of their training, Drs. Hall, Imani-Shikhabadi and Tomblinson will join the Department of Radiology as faculty in their respective specialty areas.
In addition, special recognition awards were presented to trainees and faculty who have gone above and beyond in the last academic year. The awards and their recipients are as follows:

- Resident Teacher of the Year Award – Shuai Yuan, M.D., PGY2, Diagnostic Radiology
- Fellow Teacher of the Year Award – Tyler McKinnon, M.D.
- Teacher of the Year Award – Adam Guttentag, M.D.
- Senior Residents’ Best Teaching Section Award – Body Imaging
- Senior Residents’ Best Teacher Award – Asha Sarma, M.D.
- Thomas S. Dina Model Resident Award – Patrick Couture, M.D., Chief Resident
While most of the special recognition awards were voted on by residents, the recipient of the Model Resident Award, is nominated by faculty in recognition of humanitarianism in patient care, excellence in medical knowledge, distinction in professionalism, compassion in interpersonal skills and perseverance of learning.
“Dr. Couture has been an excellent resident whose exemplified all criteria for the Model Resident Award, and we are happy he’ll be staying with us another year to continue training as a neuroradiology fellow,” said Motuzas. “Overall, graduation was a fitting celebration for a wonderful group of residents and fellows, and we are excited for this class as they complete their training and transition into the next phase of life and begin their careers as Radiologists.”
