Edward (Ted) Fischer, Ph.D., Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Anthropology, has been appointed secondary faculty in the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences. He also serves as Professor of Medicine, Health and Society, Professor of Management and Director for the Center for Latin American Studies.
“Professor Fischer is a renowned expert in anthropology, global health, social entrepreneurship and innovation,” said Reed Omary, M.D., M.S., Carol D. and Henry P. Pendergrass Professor and Chair. “Like the field of radiology, he links disciplines that are traditionally separated from one another.”
Fischer joined Vanderbilt as faculty in 1996 following the completion of his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Tulane University. He is actively involved in research projects related to political economy, health and well-being of underdeveloped countries, and has authored a number of books related to those findings.
In addition to his work at Vanderbilt, Fischer is the founder of Maní+, a social enterprise that develops and produces complementary foods for malnourished children in Guatemala, and is an advisor to the World Health Organization-Europe Expert Group on the Cultural Contexts of Health and Well-being.
“Secondary faculty in Radiology offer members of the department the opportunity to expand their impact across campus, the nation and the world,” added Omary.
“We have begun to recognize that health involves all aspects of a person’s life, the social as well as the biological,” said Fischer. “The Department of Radiology is doing such creative and innovative work in this regard, and I am honored to be a part of it.”
Fischer joins nearly 30 colleagues from Vanderbilt’s medical, engineering and business schools with secondary appointments in Radiology.
