Vanderbilt Radiology Resident Service Day

Vanderbilt Radiology was well-represented this weekend at Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee! In a state where over 1 million people are at risk of hunger every day, Second Harvest collects almost 15 million tons of food annually from retailers, manufacturers, producers, growers, and donors. With the help of volunteers, this food is inspected, sorted, and packaged so it can be delivered to nearly 500 partner agencies over 46 counties in Middle Tennessee who help get this food to hungry children, families, and seniors.

This past Saturday, 20 Vanderbilt Radiology attendings and residents took time from their weekend to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. The morning shift braved the icy temperatures of the "cold room", inspecting, sorting, and packaging over 4 tons of frozen goods. Thanks to the morning team's industriousness, the afternoon team was able to help sort just under 4 tons of nonperishable items in much more temperature-friendly conditions. In addition, we collected money from many more attendings, fellows, and residents throughout the department, which was donated to Second Harvest on behalf of Vanderbilt Radiology. With $1 Second Harvest can provide up to 4 meals, and thanks to the current corporate donation-matching program, $1 now equals 8 meals. Thanks to the generosity of our department, we were able to collect just over $2,000 to help Second Harvest provide over 16,000 meals to hungry middle Tennesseans.

It was a great opportunity for us to spend time together as a department while giving back to our community, and we're looking forward to returning soon!
