Third-year diagnostic radiology resident Cara Connolly, M.D., has been appointed to the American Association for Women Radiologists (AAWR) Member-in-Training (MIT) Committee.
Established in 1981, the AAWR is dedicated to the career development, mentorship and networking of women in radiology and radiation oncology. As a committee member, Connolly will serve a one-year term with goals to increase trainee enrollment and promote AAWR member benefits and opportunities, including the AAWR Lucy Frank Squire Distinguished Resident Award and AAWR Speed Mentoring Session at theRadiological Society of North America Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting in Chicago.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to promote the advancement of women in Radiology,” said Connolly. “I have had wonderful female mentors on my path to medical school and residency, and this committee is just one way I can pay it forward to other residents and trainees.”
The MIT Committee is comprised of approximately 20 other women training in diagnostic and interventional radiology and radiation oncology at institutions throughout the country. Members meet quarterly by conference call, and at various national meetings for those in attendance.
Following the completion of her term with the MIT committee, Connolly says she hopes to continue her involvement in AAWR in other capacities, as needed, beyond this year. She is currently in the process of applying for a fellowship position in breast imaging, and ultimately hopes to pursue a career at a multidisciplinary private practice women’s health center.
Connolly was nominated to the committee by neuroradiology fellow Courtney Tomblinson, M.D., who serves as MIT Committee Chair and MIT representative for the AAWR’s Board of Directors. Lucy Spalluto, M.D., Assistant Professor of Radiology, also serves as AAWR President-Elect and is a current member of the organization’s Board of Directors.
