Karthik Sundaram, M.D., Ph.D., fourth-year diagnostic radiology (DR) resident, has been elected to the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Honor Medical Society.
Founded in 1902, AΩA is an honor that signifies a lasting commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, research, and community service. Each of AΩA’s 132 Chapters in medical schools across the country can select 16 percent of its graduating class, up to 25 residents/fellows, and up to three to five faculty and alumni as new members. Sundaram is one of 15 residents and fellows who will be inducted into Vanderbilt’s AΩA at its annual Induction Ceremony on March 18, 2019.
“AΩA is a prestigious honor, and it is wonderful that Vanderbilt’s chapter is recognizing the achievements of some of our outstanding residents,” said Cari Motuzas, M.D., Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology and Radiological Sciences and DR Residency Program Director.
Throughout his training, Sundaram has actively participated in research related to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided therapeutic ultrasound ablation of low-grade prostate cancer, and using ultrasound microbubbles as an adjuvant for breast cancer therapy. He has presented his educational and research work at national and sectional society meetings, including the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Association of University Radiologists and the Society of Abdominal Radiology. He has been the recipient of a number of awards, most recently RSNA’s 2018 Research Resident/Fellow Grant.
“This is a great and well-deserved honor for Karthik,” said Edwin Donnelly, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences and former Residency Program Director. “To my knowledge, he is the first person in our program to be inducted into AΩA as a resident.”
“I’m grateful to multiple faculty and staff for their leadership and guidance,” added Sundaram. “I look forward to joining other members of the Vanderbilt community in this highly-esteemed organization.”
Sundaram is expected to continue his training as a Body MRI fellow at Stanford University upon graduation from Vanderbilt’s residency program in June.
