Three VUMC Radiology faculty members have been published in the RSNA journal, RadioGraphics, highlighting cerebral venous diseases in pediatric patients.
The paper, “Imaging the Cerebral Veins in Pediatric Patients: Beyond Dural Venous Sinus Thrombosis,” published in January 2023, was co-authored by VUMC's Asha Sarma, MD, Assistant Professor, Dann Martin, MD, Assistant Professor, and Sumit Pruthi, MBBS, Section Chief of Pediatric Radiology and Professor. Richard Jones, PhD, and Stephen Little, MD, of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, are also co-authors of this publication.
Within the piece, authors assert “the range of cerebral venous disorders in pediatric patients is different from that in adults” and that “knowledge of the practical embryology and anatomy of the medullary, cortical, and bridging veins improves the ability of radiologists to detect and accurately characterize pediatric anomalies beyond sinovenous thrombosis.” They propose that imaging techniques can be used and optimized for such suspected cases.
