Radiology resident Meaghan Magarik, M.D., Ph.D., was recently elected to the administrative board of the Association of American Medical College’s (AAMC) Organization of Resident Representatives (ORR) during the AAMC’s spring meeting for the Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS) and ORR in Orlando, Florida.
Overseen by the AAMC, the ORR was developed as a way for residents to provide input in the development of AAMC policies while also participating in leadership development activities.
Magarik was elected by the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments as one of two radiology representatives to serve a one-year term in the ORR. As an administrative board member, she will play a larger role in the AAMC, leading a working group throughout the year and will facilitate leadership sessions at the annual AAMC leadership meeting in November 2018.
“It was a great experience,” said Magarik. “I came away from the professional development conference inspired and passionate about my future career as a radiologist. I was able to network with radiologists from a few other academic programs and gain insight into a career in academic leadership. My goal is to have a leadership role in a medical school or radiology residency program.”
The three-day professional development conference brought together more than 370 CFAS faculty members and residents from member medical schools and societies interested in advancing their careers in academic medicine. The meeting included various plenary and breakout sessions, as well as networking events.
“The conference was a very interactive leadership conference with strong mentoring on advancing academic careers and how to get involved in medical school leadership and governance,” added Magarik.
She says she hopes to run for ORR president next year.
