The CDC has updated their COVID guidelines to match the guidelines in place for other viruses such as influenza. Summary:
- Preventive measures such as hand washing and vaccination continue to be important tools for disease prevention
- When sick, students should stay home until improved and fever-free x 24 hours (without fever reducing medications)
- If still coughing/sneezing, masking is recommended x 5 days when around others to help reduce the spread of infection
Those with risk factors for more severe COVID-19 complications should still consider assessment at Student Health, as these students may be eligible for medications that can reduce the duration and severity of the infections.
Risk factors for severe COVID-19 include:
- Not being up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations
- Specific medical conditions and behaviors
- Age over 50 years, with risk increasing substantially at age > 65 years
