Pearls From the Pros: Asha Sarma Conducts Interview for ASNR

Asha Sarma, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, recently sat down with Tina Young Poussaint, MD, FACR, the first president of the American Society of Neuroradiology, to interview her and to collect some wisdom for young investigators and junior faculty.  Dr. Sarma asked Dr. Poussaint about workplace habits for success, recruiting mentors, and becoming more involved in societies like ASNR. Philip Scherer Named Section Chief of Nuclear Medicine

The Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences is proud to share that Philip Scherer, MD, will be the new Section Chief of Nuclear Medicine, effective March 1. Dr. Scherer succeeds Aaron Jessop, MD, MBA, who will be staying with VUMC Radiology through the end of June. “I am deeply honored by the opportunity,” Dr. Scherer says. “During my time at VUMC, it has been a privilege to work with supportive faculty and staff in the Nuclear Medicine section and Radiology department.”

John Gore Named University Distinguished Professor

Congratulations to John Gore, PhD, Director of the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science, for being named a University Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, University Distinguished Professor of Physics & Astronomy, & a University Distinguished Professor of Radiology & Radiological Sciences.

Charles Caskey and Li Min Chen Receive R01 Grant for Focused Ultrasound Study

Congratulations to Associate Professor Charles Caskey, PhD, and Professor Li Min Chen, MD, PhD, for being awarded a new R01 Grant for their project "Next generation transcranial ultrasound-based neuromodulation using phase shift nanoemulsions. " This project will develop particles containing drugs that can be released at target locations in the brain for ultrasound as a new way to treat brain disorders.

Kristin O'Grady Participates in Pilot Program for Women in Radiology

VUMC Radiology Assistant Professor Kristin O'Grady, PhD, recently participated in a pilot workshop for women in their early imaging research careers. The findings of that pilot workshop have now been published. In October 2022, the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging hosted "Presence and Voice of Female Perspectives Within Radiology." The workshop, which was designed by the attendees, sought to create a unique, organic, and impactful program that would serve as a foundation to build an active and connected community of women in imaging.
