Vanderbilt’s Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences will offer annual lead shielding inspections on designated Tuesdays and every Wednesday from March 7 to June 15, from 3:30 to approximately 9 p.m.

The Tennessee Department of Health and Environment, Radiological Health Division, requires inspection of personal protective lead shielding. Vanderbilt University Medical Center requires lead shielding be inspected visually and fluoroscopically annually.

Also, lead shielding inspections are a high priority with the Joint Commission, as evidenced during past visits, as well as are verified during periodic Environment of Care (EOC) Surveys by VEHS, Environment of Care Teams.

The inspection cost is per piece:

  • Lead shielding with current inspection date (2018) and/or new lead shielding: vests $10 each, skirts $10 each, one-piece aprons $10 each, fetal aprons $15 each, half-aprons and thyroid collars $5 each.
  • Lead shielding with expired inspection dates (2017 or before): vests $20 each, skirts $20 each, one-piece aprons $20 each, fetal aprons $30 each, half-aprons and thyroid collars $10 each.

Payments are to be made by 1180 Form after the department is contacted by Radiology concerning their inspection cost after their scheduled appointment(s).

Appointments for the 2018 inspection cycle must be made between now and March 30. To schedule an appointment, contact David Martin at (615) 343-0200 or david.martin@vanderbilt.edu.
